The Los Angeles Blades Ice Hockey Club is hosting the PLAY LA 2015 Hockey Tournament. Our club is non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, and has worked to establish competitive and social ice hockey teams for gay, lesbian, transgender, straight, men and women.
After having successfully staged PLAY LA tournaments in 2001, 2002 and 2003 the Los Angeles Blades joined with the Colorado Gay Intl. Hockey Association, and with sponsorship from the Coors Brewing Company, established the Coors Cup. It was the first gay ice hockey tournament in North America with a major corporate title sponsor and the first such tournament to offer prize money that was donated to each divisional champions charity of choice.
The 6th annual Coors Cup in 2011 was hosted by Los Angeles and was a huge success, bringing together hockey players from gay communities throughout the United States, Canada and the world. A total of 350 people participated in the week long festivities and tournament.
After fulfilling our contract with Coors and our brother team in Colorado, the LA Blades have decided to have a yearly Labor Day tourney. We look forward to growing and continuing our success.
The 2016 Play LA will be held in Lakewood, CA over Labor Day Weekend (September 2nd – 5th). Building on the success of the prior 10 tournaments, participation is expected to exceed 250 hockey players, along with about 100 fans. We will have a woman’s division too. Registration will be available for individuals as well as established teams.
The major objective is to inform gay hockey players throughout North America and the world that there is a place for them to be themselves and play hockey. The tournament has dispelled a lot of misleading and inaccurate information about gay sports players and has fostered a “melting pot” for straight and gay people to attain one goal: to play hockey in a friendly positive environment.
Play LA 2016 will be an excellent opportunity for your organization to reach a large audience and your sponsorship will help promote this positive GAY sporting event and support worthy charitable organizations.
